What's on

Medea by Jean Anouilh

It is hard for all things to be born into this world,
And it is hard for them to die…

Medea is one of the eternal myths by which we understand more about the world and ourselves, as we appreciate something of what it is to be both the ultimate 'outsider' and a consummate 'insider'. Jean Anouilh's play is an adaptation to the modern world of a myth about a woman scorned because of expediency and obliterated in the process. She exacts revenge in the only way left open to her. Anouilh's version is realistic and tense: Medea has no way out, and the consequences are terrible.

Departure hosts Soulfire Theatre's second performance of this powerful drama. Through it they explore the themes and emotions of the 'outsider' in a world where the ambition for power knows no bounds: love and life can easily be sacrificed and justifications fly off the tongues of the 'civilised' without even the slightest flick of an eyelid.

Algebra by Hussain Ismail

Algebra is the new play in development by playwright Hussain Ismail. Soulfire Theatre is providing support by organising readings and looking for possible funding to further develop the work and ultimately stage the play. Soulfire Theatre organised a reading of ALGEBRA at Departure in April 2009. The next stage of development is a rewrite and then developing it specifically for the stage.

Algebra is about the struggles of two Bangladeshi British brothers who are on a mission to rescue their youngest brother who has been kidnapped by Fate. The play is evocative, surreal and poetic. It is about the struggle to exist by any means necessary.
