Outspoken: rising voices Paris/London

RAP/Spoken word workshop

23-24 april 2011
Rich Mix • 35-47 Bethnal Green Road, London, E1 6LA

The Project

There is intense national debate in both France and Britain about the way forward for integration despite their differing political approaches. Young people from ethnic minority communities should be at the forefront of these debates. The project aims to bring together young people from diverse backgrounds in Tower Hamlets, London and La Goutte d’Or, Paris to compare experiences about identity, place and belonging.

Workshop

There will be a two-day rap/spoken workshop at the RICH MIX for young people aged 18-26. These workshops will be free with lunch and travel expenses provided. Young people will work with a team of Professional artists from London and Paris. There will be an opportunity to perform at the launch event of the installation ‘PERIPHERICAL COMMUNITIES’ on 3rd May 2011. The event will be filmed.

PERIPHERICAL COMMUNITIES

Video installation

French artist Melik Ohanian brings his installation ‘PERIPHERICAL COMMUNITIES’ to the UK for the first time. Spoken word and film express views and feelings of young people from La Goutte d’Or area of Paris on identity and belonging.

There is intense national debate in both France and Britain about the way forward for integration despite differing political approaches. Young people from ethnic minority communities should be at the forefront of these debates. This installation gives a platform to young people from Paris to voice their concerns and feelings.

PERIPHERICAL COMMUNITIES is the first part of an ongoing arts project on identity and belonging. The next part will incorporate the work of young people from London - finally resulting in an installation with Parisian and London youth, which will be exhibited in the future.
